Diary page 10, 28-29 August 1881

Sunday the 28
Went and had
a look at Dundonald
Castle & seen Grandfather’s
grave, then to the Old
Auchans and got up
the tower Janet Gilchrist
Gave us the key1644
went up to
Killmarnock

Monday the 29
Dry went up to Foul
Papple, worked at
the Hay all day




Foul Papple was the farm of Allan & Maggie Wyllie in the Loudoun Parish, east of Killmarnock





James’s grandfather was John Cochrane, he died  18 June 1859  in Old Goll and is buried in the Dundonald Churchyard along side his wife Mary Tait Cochrane that died 13 November 1847 in Bogside

Old Auchans was  about 1 mile west of Dundonald, Janet Gilchrist lived there in 1881, living on private means
1644 was the last year it was used as a military defensive structure
